Spring Equinox Greetings, Integral City-zens and Friends of Integral City

Today’s Integral City Sparkies for City Diversity Generators:

What city in the world has developed a course of study and practise that enables a person to methodically progress from cradle to peak prformance at the defined levels of complexity that deliver leadership to the powers 1 through 8?. p.120

Preparing leaders to the Power of 8, involves capacity development with a curriculum and experience that aligns knowledge, values, structures and life conditions.. p.123

We may be standing on a whole new threshold of human capacity emergence that will make the Level 8 leadership competencies (which we explored in some detail in Chapter 5) look primitive.p.140

Our senses, our learning and our science now tell us that behaviors in the city can become more intelligent. Our aspirations tell us that we must become more intelligent. p.144

Hamilton, M., 2008, Integral City: Evolutionary Intelligences for the Human Hive

2012 is a year pregnant with the anticipation of change. Many look to the storylines presaged by the Mayan calendar, that this year is the end of an old way of Being, and the beginning of a new way of Becoming. The shifts from theatres of war to congresses of peace; the revisiting of the first Rio sustainability conference; the many tensions of the 2012 US election; the craziest aberrations in weather patterns; and the continued ambiguities of the old monetary system – all these life conditions call attention to the scale of change that is occurring at a global level. We sense the uncertainties of the future, the non-linear jumps in our experience of time, place and moral influence, the continuous flow of scientific discovery that reveals the amazing miracle of life and the surprising practise of compassion that embraces the deepest tragedies of human and kosmic shifts.

It is a time for the Diversity Generators of the Human Hive to intensify the messages in their dance that show new resources, new directions, and new potentials for the City – the most complex of Human Systems. It is time for the intelligence of the Human Hive to be recalibrated to the Power of 8 and beyond. In 2012 Integral City will initiate the course of study that enables the City to learn through the lenses of the Integral Paradigm. We are ready to open the doors of an eLaboratory where we invite all who are part of the Brain Trust to collaborate on designing and putting into practise a new operating system for the City.

Integral City will leverage the change climate of 2012 to meshwork the What, the So What and the Now What of action learning, to integrate scientists, philosophers, designers and practitioners into a community of People, Purpose, Practise and Priorities in service to the wellbeing of our Cities and our Planet.

2011 may be the tipping point that globally shifted all the Pillars of Sustainability. By year-end each leans as precariously as four Towers of Pisa.

First we watched the Environmental Pillar reign tsunami terror on the city of Sendai, followed by the infrastructural meltdown of the Fukushima nuclear plants, sending shock waves throughout the worldwide energy sector.

Before we caught our breath the Economic meltdown of the EU sent shivers of 2008 deja-vu around the financial world, expanding uncertainty and contracting portfolios of wealth.

Simultaneously the Social Pillar caught fire during the Arab Spring, spreading from Tunisia to Egypt to Libya and Yemen and still raging in Syria, the Straits of Hormuz and once again at the gas pump.

Finally the Cultural Pillar Occupied Wall Street and city centres around the world, challenging positions of power with perspectives of unfairness.

Energy, Matter and Information are being recalibrated above, below and around every Pillar. Sustainability itself has been occupied in very new ways.

December Solstice Greetings, Integral City-zens and Friends of Integral City

Today’s Integral City Sparkies for City Emergence:

The larger the city the more likely it will span a wider and wider spectrum of individual purposes; ghettoes of differing purposes and intentions will emerge and the demands of governance will need to address these discontinuities. p.181

The capacity of community and leadership are co-determined. Each arises simultaneously, with the community being the container for holding the emergence of leadership and leadership being the catalyst for emerging community. p.187

The new bottom line for leaders who have consciousness to the Power of 8, will be to enable emergence and evolution in people, organizations, cities and the world simultaneously. p.195

Health … emerges from resilience — a capacity to flexibly relate to one’s environment, including relating to others in it – so that sourcing nourishment, sustaining life and reproducing may continue to occur despite conditions of change in the environment. p.224

Hamilton, M., 2008, Integral City: Evolutionary Intelligences for the Human Hive

As 2011 moves into the season of Light, we embrace the City around the world as both the stage and the actor where change is emerging fastest. The City has not only been occupied literally but occupies our mind symbolically as the centre where structural emergence is exploding into new forms. Highly leveraged, deeply connected, integrally enmeshed, the City now pulses with both individual freedom and a new wave of collective reformation. I am the City and the City is me. We are the City and the City is us.

Integral City will reach beyond the OCCUPY disturbances of 2011, to EMERGE  new leaders, actions, relationships and structures to evolve the City through 2012 and beyond.

Integral City Developers #occupy the positive 1% who generate diversity to overcome the blockages and barriers in city systems. They #occupy development opportunities grand enough to attract others but where the economic risk is designed to reward purpose, priority, profit, people and planet.

Developers #occupy the Integral City Voice with visions, inspiring pictures and projects that call forth the future. Combinations of entrepreneur and dream-maker, they are always on the lookout for innovative designs and technological capacities. They can be adaptable and quick to change, politically adept with freedom to choose. The best Developers #occupy scientific and spiritual voices, and task and people skills with equal competence.

Developers of the Integral City #occupy commitments to sustainability, ecology and spirituality as natural features of their developments. But They are often confronted with outdated planning approvals, antiquated building codes, unwilling trades people and citizen resistance to change. Nevertheless, They #occupy the edges of our systems where behind all the 99% of surface chaos, exists elegance, order, flexibility and flow.

Integral City Developers #occupy the special 1% of intelligent voices that enable new patterns, systems, structures and infrastructures to evolve 100% of the human hive.

We #occupy politics as the art of the possible – it is our natural environment. We support the Integral City’s production and profit sectors so they generate rewards for people who #occupy the city everywhere.

We #occupy the hearts of city fathers and mothers who work to leave a legacy for our future generations. Our Civil Society Board Members #occupy successful economic and environmental city leadership roles. We #occupy beliefs in the priority of people’s contribution to profit and planetary success.

Who #occupies the Voice of the Civic Manager?  When everyone else is speaking at #occupy city square, who’s ears are occupied by the Civic Manager’s words? The voice of the Civic Manager speaks for senior leaders in city hall, the healthcare system, the justice system, the school system, and the library system. The Civic Manager calls forth conditions for the Integral City to run effectively across all sectors. The voice calls for civic order and safety. Sometimes it sounds as systematic as an air traffic controller, others as logical as an engineer and yet others as strategic as a designer. The voice of the Civic Manager is trained to coordinate the orchestra of city planning, engineering, economic development, transportation, waste and water management, energy distribution, street maintenance, cultural and social planning, emergency and medical services, animal/human interface management and ecological/sustainability strategy. The voice of the Civic Manager recites building standards, maintenance schedules, official agendas and town hall calendars. The Civic Manager’s voice persuades responsibility and accountability across multiple disciplines, sectors and stakeholders.

Occupy the Voice of the Civic Manager and you may be speechless when senior governments downsize and off-load, wondering how to deliver increasing results with declining resources. At the same time the Voice of the Civic Manager occupies a ferris-wheel of accelerating change as city populations have become Global Villages.

Often caught between the opposing expectations of citizens and senior politicos, the Voice of the Civic Manager transposes more keys, translates more lyrics and spans more octaves than any other voice in the Integral City .

The Voice of the Civic Manager occupies the channels we depend on for our daily existence in the Integral City.

How do I #Occupy the voice of the Integral Citizen? I begin with the power of  who I am as the “I” of the city. As such I actually occupy the ”mind” of the city. My voice occupies a tone that resounds with my full aliveness. Its melody is my purpose. Its chorus is my family and friendships. Its bass notes are my community. My voice works as part of a choral symphony where differences are not only accepted, they occupy the orchestra’s dynamic contribution to the world.

I am culturally creative and learn by listening how others voice in the moment. I honour the voices of others and want us to sing to our highest potential. As I occupy my true voice, I want to hear others voices too. I speak for the oppressed and fight for human rights and dignity for all.

Yet after 10 or 20 or even 30 years of trying to occupy my culturally creative potential, I am often overwhelmed by the cacophony of economic, environmental, social and spiritual dissonance. I have paid a lot of my own time, money and effort to enable many voices to be heard — with very little to show in return. Where I expected people to cooperate, collaborate and co-create, I am constantly frustrated by lack of agreement, dysfunction and disorder. I long to hear voices that transcend the chaos and confrontation in the world and inspire all citizens to occupy a new harmony in the city.

I know there IS a bigger music, a different way of voicing, a deeper way of becoming harmonious.

So, I Occupy the commitment to being a Voice that makes a difference to emerging dynamic harmony in the city.

Integral City can be occupied in many ways. It’s time to pay attention to the #Occupy Voices with their messages from the Inner Judges of the Human Hive.  If we listen closely to the voices of the 99, we can hear “Occupy” as a strong signal to pay attention to the wellbeing of our cities – where more than 50% of humans now live.

Let’s start by considering the core Principle for the wellbeing of the Integral City:

Take care of yourself. Take care of each other. Take care of this place.

Translated into Occupyngo:

Occupy yourself with care. Occupy the shoes of another with care. Occupy the places, spaces and graces of this city and its eco-region with care.
