Spring Equinox Greetings, Integral City-zens and Friends of Integral City

Today’s Integral City Sparkies for City Diversity Generators:

What city in the world has developed a course of study and practise that enables a person to methodically progress from cradle to peak prformance at the defined levels of complexity that deliver leadership to the powers 1 through 8?. p.120

Preparing leaders to the Power of 8, involves capacity development with a curriculum and experience that aligns knowledge, values, structures and life conditions.. p.123

We may be standing on a whole new threshold of human capacity emergence that will make the Level 8 leadership competencies (which we explored in some detail in Chapter 5) look primitive.p.140

Our senses, our learning and our science now tell us that behaviors in the city can become more intelligent. Our aspirations tell us that we must become more intelligent. p.144

Hamilton, M., 2008, Integral City: Evolutionary Intelligences for the Human Hive

2012 is a year pregnant with the anticipation of change. Many look to the storylines presaged by the Mayan calendar, that this year is the end of an old way of Being, and the beginning of a new way of Becoming. The shifts from theatres of war to congresses of peace; the revisiting of the first Rio sustainability conference; the many tensions of the 2012 US election; the craziest aberrations in weather patterns; and the continued ambiguities of the old monetary system – all these life conditions call attention to the scale of change that is occurring at a global level. We sense the uncertainties of the future, the non-linear jumps in our experience of time, place and moral influence, the continuous flow of scientific discovery that reveals the amazing miracle of life and the surprising practise of compassion that embraces the deepest tragedies of human and kosmic shifts.

It is a time for the Diversity Generators of the Human Hive to intensify the messages in their dance that show new resources, new directions, and new potentials for the City – the most complex of Human Systems. It is time for the intelligence of the Human Hive to be recalibrated to the Power of 8 and beyond. In 2012 Integral City will initiate the course of study that enables the City to learn through the lenses of the Integral Paradigm. We are ready to open the doors of an eLaboratory where we invite all who are part of the Brain Trust to collaborate on designing and putting into practise a new operating system for the City.

Integral City will leverage the change climate of 2012 to meshwork the What, the So What and the Now What of action learning, to integrate scientists, philosophers, designers and practitioners into a community of People, Purpose, Practise and Priorities in service to the wellbeing of our Cities and our Planet.

December Solstice Greetings, Integral City-zens and Friends of Integral City

Today’s Integral City Sparkies for City Emergence:

The larger the city the more likely it will span a wider and wider spectrum of individual purposes; ghettoes of differing purposes and intentions will emerge and the demands of governance will need to address these discontinuities. p.181

The capacity of community and leadership are co-determined. Each arises simultaneously, with the community being the container for holding the emergence of leadership and leadership being the catalyst for emerging community. p.187

The new bottom line for leaders who have consciousness to the Power of 8, will be to enable emergence and evolution in people, organizations, cities and the world simultaneously. p.195

Health … emerges from resilience — a capacity to flexibly relate to one’s environment, including relating to others in it – so that sourcing nourishment, sustaining life and reproducing may continue to occur despite conditions of change in the environment. p.224

Hamilton, M., 2008, Integral City: Evolutionary Intelligences for the Human Hive

As 2011 moves into the season of Light, we embrace the City around the world as both the stage and the actor where change is emerging fastest. The City has not only been occupied literally but occupies our mind symbolically as the centre where structural emergence is exploding into new forms. Highly leveraged, deeply connected, integrally enmeshed, the City now pulses with both individual freedom and a new wave of collective reformation. I am the City and the City is me. We are the City and the City is us.

Integral City will reach beyond the OCCUPY disturbances of 2011, to EMERGE  new leaders, actions, relationships and structures to evolve the City through 2012 and beyond.

September Equinox Greetings, Integral City-zens and Friends of Integral City

Today’s Integral City Sparkie for City Embodiment :

The carrying capacity for each city is intimately tied to its eco-region, even though cities have attempted to import their needs from increasingly distant locations.
(Hamilton, M., 2008, Integral City: Evolutionary Intelligences for the Human Hive, p.152)

Integral Sustainable Design, by Mark DeKay works on the body, mind, heart and soul as it serves three audiences – each captured in one word of its title. Firstly it guides the scholar of Integral Theory to explore the principles of Design. Secondly, the book serves the student of Sustainability to appreciate the fundamentals of wholism, living systems, systems thinking and ecology. Thirdly its primary audience is designers and students of design and architecture to whom it introduces and explores the emerging field of Integral Design.
(From Volume 6, Issue 3, September, 2011 Journal of Integral Theory & Practice,  Book Review by Marilyn Hamilton of Integral Sustainable Design, by Mark DeKay (Earthscan 2011) .

Here are some ways that Integral City is meshworking sustainability practices with practitioners in cities, regions and countries around the world.

June Solstice Greetings, Integral City-zens and Friends of Integral City

Today’s Integral City Sparkie for the City Body :

Cultural cohesion can be measured through metrics tracking energetic noise and resonance.

Hamilton, M., 2008, Integral City: Evolutionary Intelligences for the Human Hive, p.299

The generational wave is a supra-wave of human life patterns that embraces many of the waves in the Integral City. Embracing the waves of consciousness, values and capacity development in holons and social holons, four age cohorts are currently connecting on the Integral City dance floors of the world. These generational cohorts Grok, Talk, Walk and Rock the life conditions and mindsets that influence the emergence of evolutions and revolutions for succeeding generations. We are surmising that the news stories that masquerade as gender differences, cultural clashes and political uprisings may be rooted in unique city cultures differentiated by generational demographics and value sets. (From upcoming article, Generational Cycles, Saecula and Cities: How Do Integral Artists, Boomers, Gen X and Millennial Generations Impact City Values and Policy Development?by Marilyn Hamilton & Cherie Beck.)

Here are some quick updates on the cycle of life flowing through Integral City activities in the season ahead.

February Greetings, Integral City-zens and Friends of Integral City

Today’s Integral City Sparkie for the City Heart :

Through the negotiation of relationships, boundaries are recognized, linked, crossed, embraced, broken, denied and redefined.

Hamilton, M., 2008, Integral City: Evolutionary Intelligences for the Human Hive, p.182

As I write, the clashes in the Middle East have the rest of the world holding our breath. I keep thinking about the advice of Dr. Don Beck, who has often said, “Don’t confuse getting rid of what you don’t want, with getting what you do want.” If Dr.B  is right, then the rulers whom the populace wants ousted may also be right in pleading for a transition plan that offers some significant change of the first order in order to avoid disastrous change (i.e. revolution) of the second order. For anyone who values the future of the city, we have many lessons to learn about how the relationships – between political incumbents and opponents, between honest brokers and thugs, between friendly neighbours and hostile ones,  between meddling nations and opportunistic –all bring pressures to bear on the multiplicity of societies alive in Middle Eastern cities that are simultaneously evolving through multiple stages of human development. (We are not yet at any form of simplicity on the other side of complexity – instead we are witnessing or if we are in the middle of it, experiencing first hand —  the massive mash up that precedes such a longed-for state.)

For those readers who can remember what pathetic fallacy is, it is not too irreverent to suppose that Gaia herself is erupting on the opposite side of the world with the floods and winds of equally calamitous proportions in Australia.

For these times, we need all hands on deck from the four points of the compass, so this newsletter reminds us where resources are emerging.

  1. Our newest Meshcast interview is with city wellbeing and emergence researcher, Will Varey, located in Perth Australia. Download the Meshcast and Listen to Will Varey to appreciate his evolutionary perspective on the multiple cities that co-exist in one location and how he has helped policy developers navigate those complexities.
  2. In Vancouver Canada, from March 5-8th,  Dylan Newcomb, founder of UZAZU will be bringing his Language of Energy Explorations to town. For more details click here. (I have been fascinated with Dylan’s work ever since he and his dance lab danced the evolutionary intelligences of Integral City two years ago in The Hague!! Deep city work needs the awareness of the body that Dylan’s energizing sessions can wake up.)
  3. April 7-10, 2011, the Center for Human Emergence Netherlands is sponsoring the SDi EuroConfab in the City of Almere, NL, using a case study of the City of Almere. Integral City will be presenting, along Dr. Beck, Dr. Remmers +++ Get details and register here.
  4. Globe Forum is reviewing the final nominations for its Sustainable City Awards 2010 (deadline in Feb. 4, 2011). This award will be announced at the Globe Forum in Stockholm May 11 & 12, 2011.  Globe Forum Stockholm will focus on Business Innovation for Sustainable City Growth.
  5. Gil Friend, author of The Truth About Green Business has announced an eLearning version of The Truth About Green Business – Sustainability In Practice — (developed together with partners at Tripos Software) . It will be available in Q1 – delivering engaging, on-demand, interactive learning to your employees’ desktops. Click here to send Gil info about your interests.
  6. In January we started delivering the inaugural Graduate Certificate for Sustainable Community Development at Royal Roads University. We are working with the Green, University Learning, Solar, City of Colwood as our Community of Interest.  And we are already taking registrations for next year.  Click here.
  7. World Future Society’s Annual Conference is in Vancouver, Canada, July 8-10, 2011. Integral City has been invited to deliver a seminar on “Grok, Talk, Walk, Rock: Constellating a Choreography for Four Generations in the City”.
  8. Center for Human Emergence Canada is sponsoring a Catalytic Conversation on the Livable City in early June (date tbc) and a Spiral Dynamics integral Level 1 Training in Edmonton, July 14-17, 2011. For details contact Civic Meshworker, Beth Sanders at beth@populus.ca.

I have just finished editing an interview I did with one of Integral City’s Advisors,  Will Varey, of Emergnc in December, 2010. It will be posted for readers’ listening pleasure on Meshcasts later today.

We had a most wide-ranging dialogue that explored cities as living systems. Will’s grounding in sustainability provided a “pingable” trampoline to explore the ecology of the city’s values, perspectives, experiences, cultures, healths and wellbeing.

We shared the discovery that a city is not just one simple location. Rather it is one location that is experienced differently by every person in the city, because each person has their own unique values, worldviews and perspectives. They may be influenced strongly by the family and ethnic culture to which they belong, but essentially, each citizen is walking around with their own distinctive inner map of the city. This is mind-boggling to consider. I imagine everyone’s  inner lives floating above and around and through each person like cartoon balloons. They are constantly bumping into each other, overlapping, dissolving, being assimilated, re-forming, shape-shifting. They are invisible fields of inform-ation that become accessible when we communicate. Is there any wonder we have such a need to communicate? Isn’t it a wonder that we can make meaning of these myriad versions of the city at all?

In fact Will pointed out a major dilemma of these multiple cities in one location is that they have to make use of one infrastructure – like a water system. The location and its outer infrastructure tend to be a singular reality on which the multiple inner cities must come to agreement on how to share. It is the job of policy developers and administrators to frame and manage such agreements. And when you paint the challenge that faces these (often faceless) managers, that they must make sense of multiple inner cities to operate a single outer city,  it ought to call forth from us a new respect for every city infrastructure manager (think water, waste, transportation, communications) who does their job well.

One of the great advantages of the Integral Model for the city, is that it helps to notice the patterns in the multiple cities that people experience and make sense of them in this one location. As you negotiate your city today, be curious about the multiple cities that surround you and appreciative of the one location (and its managers) that supports you (with a little help from its imported footprint of resources).

November Greetings, Integral City-zens and Friends of Integral City

Today’s Integral City Sparkie for the City Brain :

… a tension in favor of the values and behavior that are most coherent with the current life conditions will tend to be maintained. The flip side of this behavior is that the dominant culture will protect itself against diversity generation. When life conditions finally require the solutions that diversity generation can offer, the problems created by the conformity enforcer values will usually have become so acute that the majority are willing to change. It appears that these natural evolutionary cycles are fractal and emerge at all levels of scale …

Hamilton, M., 2008, Integral City: Evolutionary Intelligences for the Human Hive, p.187

What a difference a month makes. From October’s jubilant Chilean miners’ rescue to November’s desperate Irish economic rescue. We must ponder, how do we know if an eruption of the underworld brings nutrients to the surface or merely toxic discharge? Is it the season of Advent, regrouping, full body scans, pat downs, WikiLeaks, shadows, surrender, pollination, dormancy, climate change or long economic emergencies? We live in a world where tensions, seasons, cultures and expectations are so jumbled we need an integral map to sort out mind, brain, heart and body – so that we can notice the pattern language of the evolutionary impulse as it emerges more resilient meshes.

So amongst the seeming disruptions, this month’s newsletter notices signs of hope from Ireland (yes!), Sweden, and Canada.

  1. This month I spent a week in Ireland. While the media reported on the jaded negotiations of the EU and IMF with the Dail, Integral City was contributing to Globe Forum Dublin, witnessing 200 of Ireland’s best researchers and innovators demonstrate Ireland’s real recovery plan in their innovation, ideas and intellect. Listen to our interview with Globe Forum Founder Johan Gorecki and see the Innovating Ireland that Globe Forum catalyzed in November
  2. Also check out here Globe Forum Dublin’s Highlight coverage.
  3. Integral City spoke on Cities as Innovation Ecosystems. Click here for the summary and a great video of our evolutionary teachers, the honey bee.
  4. Nominate your City for Globe Forum, Sustainable City Awards 2010 (deadline in Feb. 4, 2011). This award focuses on a holistic approach to Sustainability  in cities and integrates different types of capital for a better future in cities around the world. If your city can demonstrate one or more special initiatives that it has undertaken in the last two years in one or more of the various types of capital (environmental, intellectual, social, financial, technical, cultural, political) to reach a more sustainable future, then Click here to find the details and invitation links .
  5. Review the new Research by three Graduates of the Master’s of Strategic Leadership Towards Sustainability Program (Bleckinge Institute of Technology, Karlskrona, Sweden). Juan Carlos Kaiten, Kara Stonehouse and Sonja Niederhumer describe their work in  The Magic Canoe – Large Scale Collaboration Towards Sustainable Development. Click here to download a summary and full thesis.   In resonance with the PhD Researchers and Innovators in Dublin the authors say this about their Findings:

The magic canoe is a story about a collaboration process that magically expands in size to include any participants wanting to help in the effort towards achieving a common goal.

In order to ensure the actions taken in the complex system are not accidentally counterproductive, a strategic approach to sustainable development can be undertaken.

The concept of backcasting from basic sustainability principles using systems thinking is the core of strategic sustainable development, and can be can be applied to the collaborative body….

This research attempts to further the body of knowledge for collaboration in complex social systems, as well as link it directly to Strategic Sustainable Development. [The Research Question was:]

How do we foster effective collaboration for systemic sustainable development?

  • Sub Question 1: What are the conditions of success for collaboration?
  • Sub Question 2: How can a process of collaboration be described?
  • Sub Question 3: Based on the process, what guidelines lead to success?
